Great, but how do I get referrals from influencers?
One of the most frustrating things for entrepreneurs just starting out is finding a way to make their first sales. One powerful method is getting referrals from influencers.
If you want to improve your chances of an influencer sharing your product or service, follow these tips:
1) Make sure you FIRST focus on creating an exceptional product or service. Think, "Is there anything about my product or service that would prevent an influencer from telling their following and/or friends?" - then fix those issues. No valuable influencer wants to have their reputation tarnished by a crappy product or service. Therefore, an influencer is unlikely to take the risk of sharing anything that's less than truly exceptional.
2) Have a purpose behind your brand. What's the end result for your customer? What things do they care about most? Being clear about your purpose is what will help you connect in a deeper way with influencers. Closer values alignment with influencers equals a higher likelihood of them sharing what you have to offer. If you're selling high-end sports cars that get horrible gas mileage, don't expect an environmentally-conscious influencer to talk highly about your product. The core values aren't in alignment.
3) Give the influencer some love first...and by first I mean LONG BEFORE you ever think about asking them to share what you have to offer the world. Aim to become their most valuable brand ambassador, but in a manner that matches their marketing message. Don't spam the entire internet solely to get brownie points...it will backfire. Instead, focus on sharing honest and insightful feedback about the influencer's product with their core avatars. For example: Retweet an influencer's article, including a couple relevant hashtags that maybe they didn't include in their original tweet. Everyone loves free marketing, especially when it adds value and impact to their own marketing efforts.
Remember, influencers are regular folks just like you and me. Value them (and their followers) as people rather than just a referral method. If you demonstrate how much you value them as people through following the above tips, you'll be well on your way to generating some incredible word-of-mouth sales.
